About Hanji

Hanji is Korean traditional handmade paper. The two common materials used for Hanji are paper mulberry and aibika. More than 6 steps of the manufacturing process deal with mending and preparing these two materials.

Due to its strength and durability, Hanji has found many uses over the years including floors, walls, and doorways of straw-thatched homes to help control temperature and moisture.

It was also used to record legal documents and written histories dating back to over 800 years that are still preserved in Korea.

In modern times, Hanji has been used in both traditional Korean art applications and diverse art forms like sculpture, lampshades, collage, and painting.
